7/14/2017 - ATTN: LPD Detective Impersonator Phone Scam

The Lewiston Police Department has received several phone calls from citizens who use the website “plentyoffish.com" reportedly being contacted by someone identifying himself as a Detective with the Lewiston Police Department. In one of the cases, the caller specifically identified himself as Detective David Holmes. In all three cases, the caller states that he is an investigator with LPD and is investigating a crime involving an underage female, and in order to avoid being criminally charged, the person being called should send this Detective money, usually close to $2,100 through Walmart. The impersonator has told those he contacted that the money they send him will go toward therapy for a 15 year-old girl and will keep the sender from going to jail.

The Lewiston Police Department wants everyone to know this is a scam. We would never call and request that a citizen pay for therapy to avoid going to jail. Even if your caller ID shows the Lewiston Police Department’s phone number, which can be spoofed, please remember that law enforcement will not call you and request money. If you receive this type of call, do not provide any personal information and hang up immediately. You can call LPD’s non-emergency number at 208-746-0171 to verify if a real Detective is attempting to contact you.
